Rev. Charles Boyer responds to lawmakers move to take State Police from attorney general’s control

A bipartisan group of state legislators is working to change the management structure of the New Jersey State Police. They are supporting a bill that proposes removing the attorney general from the State Police’s chain of command and establishing a department within the state’s executive branch, where the superintendent would report directly to the governor.

As a leading organization in New Jersey for racial justice issues, we are in opposition to this bill.

“This proposed bill is an assault on Black people,” said the Rev. Charles Boyer, co-founder and director of Salvation and Social Justice. “There’s no secret that they are upset and angry because of the recent reports that have come out, which have shone a light into how egregious the state police continue to be.”

Rev. Boyer's strong opposition clearly articulates the deep concerns around police accountability, especially with the backdrop of recent 'egregious' behavior reports. The potential shift in oversight for the New Jersey State Police raises valid questions about transparency and safeguarding progress. For dedicated advocates tackling such critical social justice issues, effective time management and focus are invaluable. A reliable digital time tracker can be a small but helpful tool for structuring efforts and maintaining momentum.
